Thoughts - filtered through the sieve

Getting that itch to write a philosophical post. Maybe also because birthday was around the corner and I cannot help but make a list. Of thoughts, things and my musings.

Travel - I increasingly feel that I live in a silo. I read only particular books (despite the efforts to include writers from different ethnicity, backgrounds, countries, languages, genres in my reading list). I watch only a section of movies that are released each year, which are mostly filtered down to me through big time film enthusiasts I follow on twitter. I consume 0 news or related media. Whatever 1-2% I consume is mostly again a filtered stream and aggregation of people I follow on social media. On a regular basis I 'hang' with people from a particular strata. Even my closest friends are from similar societal, financial backgrounds. Of course we speak different languages and grew up in different parts of the world. But you know what I mean, right ?
better things lie beyond open doors?

The only exception to this is when I am traveling, despite my propensity to hate it. It flattens the world and exposes me to people, weather, cultures I would have otherwise imagined while reading a book or never given a thought to. Whether its meeting a 60 year old dancer on the train to Salzburg and noting down her recommendations for the city. Or, listening to a middle aged Marathi kaku (aunty) who manages her home, farm and a resort while serving and taking care of her guests. Travel has made me connect with people at a very different level. This has not had an impact on me as a person. I think. Yet. But it has been educational. 2016 has been exceptionally good  to me in terms of travel. I hope the trend continues. With respect to finding time to travel and the means to make it happen in the material world, where money is required. Which brings me to the next thing on my mind.

Time and wait - All through my 20s I struggled with being patient for something and then not being patient for the same thing. At times I chose to be patient for the wrong reasons and things never worked out. At times it worked out really well. But what I have learned over the years is, waiting is hardly a good strategy. Few things for eg. progressing in a career, becoming fit enough for running a marathon in under 5 hours or even finding the right person to spend your life with take time. But the preparation for them usually starts in the now. Earlier this year, I ran a marathon. I was not there physically when I registered for the race. Mentally I just felt like I could be there. Post 4 months of grueling and dedicated training, I arrived at the same conclusion. I was mentally there. Physically being there was going to be a long journey. One would rather argue that why go through all the pain if I knew this already. But that's not the point. My point is if I had not started I would not have known what it takes and whether I am willing to do it. Knowing by trying something out rather than waiting has felt rewarding to me. Taking that leap and traveling to places without worrying much about planning and money has made me really good with my expenses and account keeping. I have faltered at times, but mostly I have learned. I have become more thoughtful. Which brings me to the next thing on my mind.

Being Conscious - Over the last few years I have questioned a lot of choices I make, whether it comes to the food I eat, clothes I wear, luxuries I seek etc. etc. and the decisions I make. It has made me conscious of the impact my decisions end up having, not only on me, but people close to me, my surroundings, my environment, my home etc etc. I am still learning to not do a lot of things on auto pilot. Rather think through even the smallest of decisions. It is a lot of work at times. But I am glad I have chosen this path. It has led me to declutter my life, and my physical spaces. I still am guilty of hoarding a few material possessions, but largely I am moving toward a lifestyle of less. And the less I need or feel the need for the more I feel the following.

Gratitude - I have wondered about this state of being grateful for a long time. I have even tried to write about it. On some days I have absolutely nothing. But lately, on most days, I find myself fascinated, curious and largely amazed by what the world has to offer. Even on hopeless days, when things feel like they are falling apart. It still is not an organic reaction or a part of me. But I am increasingly grateful. It has gone beyond just the people, work, choices in my life. It is more than that. Coming from a place I still cannot describe or put a finger on. But I am grateful.
May be what you seek, really, is seeking you?

Name day and the jazz!

Couple of days back I inched closer to the big 30. here 1 inch = 1 year. Strangely I did not have the same old excitement and was more like let's get this day over with. Most of which I spent cooking and cleaning the home after the 2 month long stay away from it. Plus brother is here too! So add a dash of bickering and unexpected gifts, which made the birth day quite complete!

So I was thinking what I should do/plan after this milestone. May be for the sake of it ?
Continuing from the list I made sitting in central park, here's another list for myself.

1. Do not shy away (get bored) from meeting new people.
2. Travel to the secret list of countries you made.
3. Run.
4. Contribute more to any task you take up.
5. Show up more than expected or usual.
6. Stand up for what you feel. Hold your ground.
7. Being cynical can wait a few more years. There are lots of nice people around. Stay away from the not nice ones. Simple.
8. If someone annoys you put them in the waiting list. If they continue to do so, no reservations!
9. Read. Read. Read. Complete the reading challenge at least this year, goddammit!!
10. Ask questions. Good questions.
11. If you cannot relate with your friends or what they say, nod your head. Nod some more. They will understand hopefully.
12. New experiences and adventures. Create and share. Can never be enough of any of those!
13. Feel inspired.
14. Recommend watching Avatar the last airbender (the cartoon) to everyone! (I finally watched thanks to KT and lee!)

A day before the birthday, I felt like getting depressed about the so many important things/people I do not have in life. But then I thought at least I have the brains and energy to tackle through most of the stuff. And when even that does not work, I am surrounded and supported by the most awesome bunch of people. Online and offline. So depression can wait. Hopefully.

And because its also thanksgiving, I think I can never be thankful enough for the above mentioned factors.

one wish for today

It's allowed to be cheesy/soppy about oneself on birthdays. After all the hindi film values one has imbibed, it becomes mandatory.

So allowing myself the right of not growing up enough when required, I would say I grew up a long time back. On those little occasions when it was least expected.

Allison keys/clarke says, 'Sometimes the best way to move into the unknown is to take familiar steps, small steps. To do ordinary things to deal with something that is in no way ordinary. We're always going someplace new, all the time. Familiar things just let us pretend that we aren't moving into unfamiliar territory. You take those small familiar steps, and you try to be honest, not to live as if nothing had changed but still to go on with your life. But there are times when what you need is a piece of how things used to be.'

Oh and she is hardly 8.
So I hope to talk to people, a lot of whom I have not been in touch with out of choice or otherwise, today. To feel familiar.

One last birthday wish this. Promise.

The birthday post!

Birthdays excite me! Yes crossing the silver line has got nothing to do with the fact that I should grow up and act all mature about birthdays. It will take time.

But this birthday was slightly different with the energy levels. With the numerous shopping trips for the best friend's wedding I was super duper tired and slept at 10 the day before my birthday. A slightly sad thought of switching off the mobile and dozing off also crossed my mind. In the dilemma the sweetest thing happened. 2 of my ex-colleagues called up from Singapore. They sang the besura happy birthday song (it was our trademark during office days) and we chatted about all the sundry stuff under the roof. Got nostalgic, gossiped about managers, colleagues and made promises to meet soon. One of the guys gets married next month, and in my happy haze I promised him that I would attend the function. See, I am pretty easygoing - in the happiness high I can promise you almost anything. But I would really like to attend the wedding. My social quotient is running really high nowadays and all this catching up, lets meet, get togethers, I am finding very attractive! So there, with the chatty call I was awake again and took few more calls until I rested off my old body.

And then this friend who very well knows I expect him to call on birthday and not before or after (I can be dramatic about such things) called up an hour before saying he was sure he would not find time later. So we ended up arguing with each other until sense prevailed and I accepted the wishes and he admitted he was PMSing. Hormones I tell you are a b***h. Guys should also take iron tablets, for general health! Anyways I dearly wish that whatever caused his hormones to spike has been gotten rid of!

And then the birthday morning was spent in calls. A school friend was the first one to wish on facebook, where to everyone's dismay the birthday is unlisted. We connected on fb after 6 years and she still remembered and wished. So there, the birthday will remain unlisted.

Aai asked me to avoid going out and hence I was restricted to great food and phone calls. Later I argued with Aai that how we should go out to eat to save her all the kitchen trouble. She simply said you have been eating out all these years so go for a change. Obviously her argument was better. So Idli Sambhar and Moong ka halwa made my day scrumptilicious! Aai is the bestestestestest!

In a way I know that there is no need for any drama and think that people should think about me and call me on birthday and wish. I can bet that there are people who think about me more than only on my birthday and wish all good things for me. But drama makes life fun, no ? The joy of anticipation is great! And as far as I am concerned it wont fade for years to come! :D

Birthday bumps !!

For missy every birthday brings with it a feeling of anxiety, excitement, butterflies in the tummy and a lot of introspection. I write down one page about what I want to do, what I should do (and never act upon it !! :D)

Every birthday brings with it lots of unforgettable moments. I love the fact that so many people love me in spite of the obvious flaws. Its a great feeling.

Every birthday I also cry over lost innocence. Growing up does that to you, me thinks. The complexity of life, its so many layers and the ever lasting quest to understand, simplify them, sometimes makes you loose the childish charm about things. In the words of J. K. Rowling,
'Life is difficult, and complicated, and beyond anyone’s total control, and the humility to know that will enable you to survive its vicissitudes.'

hmmmm...

Oh well, birthdays are not only about such philosophical talk. I have gifted myself 2 great books, Eldest and Brisingr (by Christopher Paolini), considering that the reading habit is getting constricted in unknown (oh really!!) technical (I will definitely spare you the details) corridors !!
This birthday is different in a way, as it will stay on for 3 days !! :D
yea, considering the time difference, my birthday started according to Singapore time and will end according to US time. In a way, pretty hard on a person who is missing home!!
This birthday is also different on the celebrations front. The routine hang out with friends or my share of surprises is not there. Instead I will be working and finishing off some project reports. May be this one will go down as the quietest birthday in ages!! A good time to introspect (again!).

I wish myself happy growing up!! I hope the innocence within never fades, gets covered with layers of adultery. I wish that the child within never grows up (peter panish but still!!)

24 calling !!!

friend : so what's new ?

me: (thinking really hard!!! may be I can tell her that I bought some hummus yesterday..) ohh... saw my first snowfall yesterday :) :) (all smiles..its really difficult to come up with original and true replies these days..read life is so morose!!) It was a different feeling. Aisa laga jaise waqt theher gaya hai. I had a big smile carved on my tiny face! :) :)

friend: wow..good that you are enjoying!!

me: .....

Back to reality. I am enjoying. But the frequency instead of being in the supersonic range is in negative range. sigh..
So I decided its that time of the year when I make new plans and resolutions. I will be 24 soon. So my plan is to do/accomplish 25 crazy things I have not dared till date, by my next birthday. Quite an expectation from oneself to live upto. I desperately want the silver jubilee year to be spectacular. And as a testimony of my efforts to have fun (bah!!) I will keep this space updated.

Anyways now I am going back to state space analysis (sounds so cool !! :D).
25 here I come!!!

cheers,
nightflier!
